Not quite true... SDOE does not rely on DX for all the renderers. OpenGl does support 32bits texturing, but I must double check to be sure

one squadron will always take off one plane at a time, each plane following the previous one.

I think the only way of getting two planes to take off in parrallel would be to define two air ...

Indeed, transparent shadows need your vidcard to support what is called "stencil buffers". If it does not, the app will return you to the game menu.
