If so, were there any tricks to get it to run?

Thanks!

Good to hear! Happy

I was just about to make the jump to 7, but now my PC is acting up and the funds for 7 may now have go to to repair/replacement. Sad

I am having problems installing SDOE on my Windows 7 system - a 64 bits system. I guess the installer is in 16 bits and there is no way getting around this problem.
I tried the ISO-download and the installer works but ...the game wíll not load up completly but freezes when it comes to "Aircraft".
Of cource I could run dual OS (Win 7 64 bit + XP 32 bit) ...but I have bad experiences from that.
Or install SDOE on an old computer running Windows 98 and 32 RAM which I use for playing really old games - but SDOE performs better with a modern graphics card and a lot more of RAM.

Any suggestions?

are you running the game in compatibility mode?

I've not installed my game since 2001 I created a disk of my complete install and just move it over and change the media location in the ini file. works every time

No chance selecting compability mode when the installer doesn´t work...
I think Imight have a complete install on a disk somewhere ...I will see if i can use your trick!
My son recommended me to install Windows 7 Ultimate, which contains a XP pro 32 bit ...but the upppgrade will cost more than I want to spend right now.
Any more suggestions?

I think you can run the setup.exe file on the SDOE CD in compatibility mode if you wish to install that way. You should also be able to run the ISO installer, and then set the shortcut that it uses to launch SDOE in compatibility mode.

I am now checking in from 64-bif Win 7 land and my problem is the gameport.

Through some stuff I've found on the web, I've got the gameport functioning, but the Control Panel 'install' nets me nothing. As My non-USB Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro is not autodetected and Win 7 gives me no manual options, what am I to do?

To be honest... I think the gameport is dead. Microsoft stopped support in Vista and I haven't used a gameport joystick since 1998... With gameports, you have to worry about an ever changing calibration routine, losing the joysticks calibration over time along with a very noisy electrical current. You could try a gameport to USB converter but there is no 100% guarantee due to how no manufacturer seemed to ever follow the gameport standard.

For the record, 32-bit land is no good either.

I love the thinking here: Let's disable something although we could very easily support it. If gameports eat up CPU resources, fine, disable it by default so that one has to conciously turn it on if needed, but for crying out loud, support it!

This really burns me up. First the removal of 16-bit dithering from new video cards and now this. #Mad

Yeah, I don't agree with it either... But that's how MS is sometimes. They figure since there is "newer, better" technology out there of course everyone is going to switch over to it in the next couple of years... I hates it!!!

On the plus side, there are a lot of very nice USB sticks that can be had for a good price. Also, eBay is your friend. MS did make a USB Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick that is very good. I've been using mine for about 9 years now... I have my Cougar and Saitek now that I use mainly but whenever I take my laptop for some SDOE on the go I grab my MS Sidewinder Precision 2 stick.

Hey 3dp! Do you still have the driver files for the gameport? I got Win7 64bit Ultimate and my gameport I would like to get working also. Smile

Thanks!

Afraid not.

Never got them to work and felt like I was really gumming up my install, so I ditched them and did a clean Win 7 install, the latter probably unnecessary but it made me feel better.

I must confess that I really like my new USB Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. The four buttons around the hat have really come in handy for targeting now that I'm flying fighters more often with my son.

Gotcha. Smile I just got a hold of Win7 64bit Ultimate to try out as well as a spare 80GB hard drive that way my WinXP install stays intact for now. I got the gameport drivers loaded, but have yet to find a way to add in a controller...

That's pretty much where I ended. Try as I might, I could get no further. Sad

As some stuff just doesn't run on 7 and some stuff doesn't run on 64-bit, it's a double hit, so I too felt it best to have two installs. I partitioned my drive in two, installed fresh XP installs on both, then upgraded one to 7. Upgrade Win 7 disks will allow you to do a clean install but it's un-activateable. You have to have XP on the partition, even though going from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Win 7 is effectively a clean install.
