Abbeville field! Anybody kept in touch with Werner? I remember being nostalgic when I visited the actualy Abbeville area. I didn't get to see the airfield, though!

I remember much work done by Nat, WTG, Mace and myself (and others I am sure) with Mace finally cracking it so the Cat could land on water. I was told point blank by Michael Harrison that was impossible too... Wink

Hey folks!

I lurk on occasion, just to see what kind of stuff you guys are up to. The Feuerlillie is unreal! Great work! It's nice to see that there are still creative minds making stuff like that in SDOE. It's nice to be remembered, and for AF to be remembered too. I was really proud of that site, and for a long time it was fun to build and maintain.

I haven't had SDOE installed in a few years now, my gaming time is largely limited to flying a cooperative campaign in IL2, and a few other wwii games on occasion. If you're ever looking for me, let snick know or drop by the JG3 forums at www.luftwaffe.net.

All the best & Salut mes amis!

I remenber another interesting thing about SDOE communitty:
5 years ago I received from this community many good messages ... My son was born.
Now with 5 years, my little boy likes to "fly" in this game.
I think is the first generation where a PC-game comes from father to son Very Happy

Yeah it has been a while, I bought this game with my first PC ever back when I was in 10th grade, now I've graduated from college. It's spanned a large chunk of my life for sure.

I miss Siggi! I used to go round and round with him - but in a good hearted exchange of polictical views. I think he and I were the reasons Flame Wars was created. Cool He was one of the original guys. Ended up starting his own IL-2 board. He was thrown off some other board. Siggi always kept things lively. Smile

Despite our differences, I miss DanW too. He contributed some great skins. A real artist.

Spot on Finn !! Simfiles was a treasure trove of wonders. Downloading a plane took forever on 28.8, let alone all the parts of a terrain Smile

Hey All!!! Dang, I get suckered in to these memory lane threads.... Laugh

I lurk here, and the SimHQ board for SDOE, occasionally to see what the old sim is up to. Still the best time of my life, PC and sim-wise, and the continuing dedication of this community brings fond smiles to my otherwise ugly countenance. Smile I fly strictly offline now, with IL2 and BoBII:WOV, the latter of which I have had limited involvement with as a beta tester. And yes, the Spitfire continues to be my favorite ride.... Cool

The sites, and names, mentioned here so far bring back many fond memories of pleasant times and good companions. ( Duck!! It's a Hedgehog!! Pardon that one...inside humor...hehe ).

You folks rock! May you, and SDOE, go on forever!!!

I assure you, he is a feisty as ever... One day i WILL get him to fly LDOR and some of the other new things we have.. Wink

    —
LOL!! Feisty? ME?????

Jerry...doing well, all things considered. And the older I get, the more there seems to be to consider. Laugh

I can almost see TS reading my above inside humor remark, smiling ruefully, and thinking 'They just never understood him.'. Smile

So many memories....once, TS, as a birthday present to me, let me shoot him down. Flew straight and level as he could...still took me almost 10 minutes, hehe!

And we had a female pilot for a while -- for my life, I cannot recall her handle -- who was nearly as good as TS. When they would fly as a team, nearly impossible to beat. I recall shooting her down once....a very lucky deflection shot...and I felt I had to apologize profusely for doing it!!!

And Snicking.....I still do it in IL2, against the AI. About half the time, it results in the AI nosing right into the ground....the other half, it's my AI wingmen who crash trying to follow. Smile

One can wonder, as a philosophic question -- is it the community that makes this sim great, or the sim that makes this community great? But in the end, it's irrelevant.....no matter what you play, if you didn't at least start with SDOE ( and, yes, EAW ), you missed a important part of combat simming and community involvement and caring.

DanW, JT and Zur are all over doing work for ThirdWire. I heard Yardstick did some work for them but have not heard anythign about him in awhile. I talk to Deigo like a year ago and then nothing (he was going textures for terrains in Project 1 for awhile)

I miss the days of talking to Michael on ICQ and in Kali about what new thing he added to SDOE a year before the game came out!

I still have a few pics of online games with peoples score to see who was flying. Might dig around and post some.

Indeed it was!! Thanks Jeeves!!
I think it was the only time in my life I got the best of a female at anything.....and it embarrassed me. Laugh

Pete Hawk's board...Activision servers....MH, Mighty, Zur, Siggi...so many names, so many I can't recall. What great days those were, and great times.

Am going to be putting together a upgraded system ( for me....it's old by today's standards already ) in the next few weeks. After I get everytihng running, I might dig out my old SDOE and check it out again ( last try was a disaster, hehe ). Does the P51 still fly like a paper airplane hung by sewing thread in a windstorm? Cool

WTG has contributed greatly to this sim also. I have created a title of Govt Contractor for him.. (face it, he is one of our master builders...) The title has been created (and there are others it may be assigned to...) but right now, I cant get it to recognized the change.. But I thiought I would post this to let people know I am working on it....

You suffered from that to? Feels exactly like it happened to me. Had to dive into the unknown and find a "patch". And mind you that google wasn't running as today back then.

Then I tried to get online, just for two chaps to tell me that I needed more patches.... Laugh

I didn't know squat about file management until I got this sim - long before we had plane packs and automatic loaders. Everything had to be loaded in by hand. Unfortunately, the file management aspect probably turned off a lot of users, limiting the success of this sim.

Thanks Snick Happy ... first day back and I get a title. Don't know what it means, but I am honoured Wink

Commencing countdown to mention of the PBY rebuild I never got around to finishing ( only kidding Snick! )

You have to ask?!! Try a forum search on "halifax" and see how often it comes up associated with words to the effect "gee I'd like to see" or "now what we need"... A B-24 is going to appear shortly in the new Allied Legacy Pack release, but I don't know how much it will prove to have advanced beyond the single-plane unfinished version found in the WWII downloads. That is known only to 3dp and the planebuilders.

It seems like forever since i have been here. I miss the old days dearly and am looking forward to getting back on the scene. Cheers to all the oldtimers. It touched my heart to see that my baby (simfiles) was dearly missed as I regretted not being able to continue hosting. Over the weekend I found my dusty old copy of SDOE and thought it was time to find the latest packs and take her up for a spin for old time sakes. Hope to see some of my old and dear friends from the SDOE community up there in the air. Just be kind and don't shoot me down right off.

I'll vote for the Heinkel He100. I know the DR1's, Bessie and Polycanus were early add ons, but I thought they weren't by the community.

I remember the old days... I changed my nick so may times I doubt anyone remembers me. I was confusion, unglucksrabe, capt blood, and finally shark? I remember siggi lol.

Nothing gave me the same feeling of flight as sdoe so I stopped simming all together. I kept buying the IL-2 stuff but never playing it.

I never built anything but I sure loved flying online with all the wonderful creations. Thanks for the memories!

What the hell is this!

Wow, I haven't seen any of you guys in a long ol'time. Looks like most of you guys are well. Great! Hello all.

I found this forum by chance and just wanted to say hi. I remember most of you. Indeed sdoe had some good times for me. I cut my teeth in on CG stuff with this sim I owe Mr.Harrison a lot of thanks for creating such a ultra realistic sim, that it inspired me to pursue 3D further.

Besides the modding, I think my favorite times where doing hedgehogs missions, with everyone and their squadies. Full server room nightly. Good times.

I still have all my SDOE files though I havent played with them in years. I do get a chuckle everytime I see the old DvII model... and think back to where it started.

I dont play games very often but still do a lot of model and texture work. Mostly WWI exclusively any more. The Great War will always be my favorite era of flight.

Most of the time I am causing trouble over at The Aerodrome. Here is some of what I have been been up to lately. http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/art/32334-fokker-triplane-ver-2-0-a.html There are even a few other old sdoer's there.

And here is my site, http://www.zoysgig.com . It's sort of outdated but you'll get the idea.

Sweet, good to see you all are still alive Smile

Hey guys,
Can't believe its been 10 years since SDOE was released. I'd love to check it out again, but I sold out for a mac about three years ago.

Anybody remember me from back in the day? I was on even before this forum, before the game even came out, on the ol' blue board. PeteHawk, Zurawski, and a whole bunch of us chomping at the bit, harassing Michael Harrison with questions about the game. I promised I would never reveal this, but its so long ago now, Pete Hawk actually sent me a beta copy about two weeks before the official release. Getting that package in the mail was quite a thrill!

Anyway, glad to see the community is still around!

Possibly a couple of years. I think he was trying to get it made abandonware or give us some sort of ownership, but I'm not certain. He did write last year that VDU is the only one that has a copy.

I think, from what I recall of the very early days, that SDOE was released with what was one of the best flight models of it's day. The reviewers picked the game apart, but missed the fact that it actually flew very well!

It was my first experience of a game that had to be patched to even run...

In it's real favour, though, was the fact that it could be modded and the tools to do it were there very quickly.

All the rest is polishing Smile It's a pity that the flight model will never see the light of day in a new sim, since the only thing that really looks dated on it is the world the planes fly in. The rest can still look good enough for modern standards. Add in a dynamic campaign, and the thing would make a cracking budget release.

There's always a way to make it work. I expect that he simply couldn't devote the time to make it happen.

Given that Inertia created RC Simulator from the FS codebase there's clearly no legal impediment to re-using it.

Wow michael, its good to see you. Last time I chatted with you was in Kali before SDOE was released. What little time we did have someone with the code some great things were done for SDOE. But with only 1 person with the code at any given time it was hard for that person to do the work needed to update the code with things like updated API and further code advances.

We'll keep plugging away at this old beast till that day comes. You know we have remote guided missles and SAM's now right? Smile

Sure thing! It won't be today, I'm driving to San Antonio but I've got a WW2 Base Pack install with the extras ready and waiting. Also, there is a 1.6.0.7 Beta Patch that allows higher widescreen resolutions: http://site.openplanesim.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5317&postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=0

For those of you who are keen to relive some good ole times again how about we all get up to online spec as soon as possible and those who are rdy already can link up at HL and get in some practice before Cowhunting season begins in earnest early 2013? hey mate .. okay so if I re-install from the dvd and also patch it with the 2 files for multiplayer i should be good to go for online or has the game evolved much more since the dvd was released and we need a new updated installer? I know the step by step method works but omg..this brings back memories I'd rather forget haha!! I think for now I'm gonna go with the dvd method and patch it with the 2 files that Rends sent to me ages ago and then at least get it running again..that will be some achievement on it's own.. if I install from the dvd with 1606 from memory then i will mm with others using 1607 beta right? I should just be able to install 1607 straight over 1606 without any issues other than the usual c&p of inp and ini files etc? .. omg I've opened pandora's box..what have i done!?

I don't even remember what the DVD came with sadly... Sad The step by step should have links to the latest versions of whatever files Rends sent you.

You can install 1.6.0.7 to its own folder, it will take the proper ini and inp files from the main SDOE directory. That way if no one is using 1.6.0.7 you still have 1.6.0.6

Pandora's box indeed! Wink

no probs mate. I have successfully installed from the dvd and the 2 files from Rends (multiplayer fix and the the propertyfilefix 117?) and so far all working well except I cant get the game to recognize my joystick even when I use the last working keyboard.inp from my last online install in 2009. I haven't yet d/l 1607 but I'm seriously thinking about it! If I can get my joystick issue sussed i'll be a very happy chappy indeed Smile Not too sure how I'll go with online compatability with anyone else but that can be worked out i am sure. Wow it's just soo amazing to be playing this old girl again! Smile

Hey Blind_Faith thanks. Would that be the sdemons.ini file? I'm assuming it is as I can't find any other .ini files. I have my steering coupled to rudder but only get left rudder. I get no throttle or climb and can't roll / yaw to either side either. As far as I can see my keyboard.inp is setup correctly with commands for joystick inputs. Ill have to keep tinkering with it. Smile

Ok I think I know why my joystick is only partially working. I've just discovered that the software for the stick has know compatibility issues with windows7. I'm upgrading to the new software now so hopefully that'll fix the issues. If not I may have to take the stick apart and clean it out. It hasn't really been used since 2009!

Cheers Blind_Faith..I ran the FSSDOEJoystick.exe and discovered that I get no response from the sliders for Axis': Joystick Z, Joystick RX and Joystick RY. The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro has a twist stick for the rudder control and using this program it's slider works correctly. I have no probs with the Joystick flying iL2 so I know it still works, just cant figure out why not in sdoe. I aint been able to download the win7 software yet for the JS as my internet is very slow at the moment but figure if it still works fine in iL2 it should here... I also recall a similar problem years ago when i first got it for SDOE and there was a fix for it somewhere on the forums and or also possibly something to do with the Logitec JS Profiler and SDOE and Global profile settings...thanks for you help! Smile

You need to edit the keyboard.inp file in your patch directory to match
what FSSDOEJoystick.exe is telling you. Open the file with notebook and
scroll down until you find this:

;---------------------------------
;
; Primary flight controls
;
;---------------------------------

inpStickXAnalog = JoystickAxisX
inpStickYAnalog = JoystickAxisY

inpRudderAnalog = JoystickAxisRZ

Yours may look different.
Edit so this matches what joystick.exe is telling you.
Scroll on down until you find this:

inpThrottleAnalog = Joystickslider1 : 0

Again yours may look different.

Edit this setting to match joystick.exe throttle axis.

Save the file and your done. Make sure you use the keyboard.inp
in your patch directory and not the one in the main sdoe directory.

Hi Smokey Smile Thanks for your help. I am using the DVD install and therefore there is only the one Keyboard.inp file in the main FS directory. App.exe is installed there along with FS.exe. The dvd installer didn't setup a separate patch folder and dump app.exe into it along with a copy each keyboard.inp and sdemons.ini. So I have only the 1 of each file in my main FS dir and my keyboard.inp file reads the same as yours does above. My throttle is working fine. Just no right rudder control, climb or right roll capability.

If I dl and install 1607 and into it's own patch folder does the patch come with it's own keyboard.inp and sdmons.ini files? I can't remember anymore lol. Thanks again Smile

Hi Guys...anybody still around? Guess what..? I have done another complete reinstall from the dvd and so far a successful re-install but guess what..I am having the same rotten Joystick problems all over again as before Crying .. I have the latest drivers for my same Logitech 3D Extreme Pro JS and I have also run the FSSDOE Joystick App to check that. It recognises my JS and tells me my throttle slider is working on JoystickSlider1, my climb and dive on JoyStickAxisY, my ailerons on JoystickAxisX and my Twist Rudder on JoyStickRZ. The problem is that in actual game, I have no climb, no right rudder and no right aileron for banking and my throttle is only operating at about 60%.

My keyboard.inp file has no ; in front of the respective lines so that can't be the problem and my throttle is set up as inpThrottleAnalog = JoystickSlider1 : 0

here's an extract of my Keyboard.inp file:

================================================================================
;
; ACTUAL INPUT MAP
;
;================================================================================

[COMMANDS]

;---------------------------------
;
; Primary flight controls
;
;---------------------------------

inpStickXAnalog = JoystickAxisX
inpStickYAnalog = JoystickAxisY

;---------------------------------
;
; Engine
;
;---------------------------------

; The 0 on inpToggleEngineState indicates that all the engines should be toggled.
; Individual engines may be controlled with a 1, 2, 3, etc.
inpToggleEngineState = Bounce JoystickButton9 | E : 0
inpSetEngineState = Shift E : 0 1 | Control E : 0 0 | Shift 1 : 1 1 | Control 1 : 1 0 | Shift 2 : 2 1 | Control 2 : 2 0 | Shift 3 : 3 1 | Control 3 : 3 0 | Shift 4 : 4 1 | Control 4 : 4 0

inpThrottleAnalog = JoystickSlider1 : 0
inpThrottleUpDigital = Equals : 0 5 | NumpadAdd : 0 5
inpThrottleDownDigital = Minus : 0 5 | NumpadSubtract : 0 5

Even when I couple the rudder to aileron control in options I still do not have any steerage control and still no right aileron!! And...even if I check on 'Invulnerability in options..I still suffer damage as if this option is not checked! Wtf, lol!

This is soo frustrating! I have not yet installed the propertyfix file or the multiplayer fix file yet as I just want to get my stick working first! Neither am I yet running 1.6.0.7 yet, but probs will do so into its own folder at some stage.

Perhaps I should do away with the dvd install altogether and just start from scratch .. I really want to get this back up and running again on my win7 ultimate install. At first, the install would ctd until I read a help post not to install the game to Program files and just to C:drive only and now the game runs.

Any ideas on where to go from here? If I uninstall the dvd install and start from scratch can anybody please point me in the right direction for all the files i need again? Thanks very much! Smile

Cheers,

K2

well..after many hours working on this install to get my throttle, rudder and aileron controls working and using different 'known' working versions of my keyboard.inp file and with the same result I am beginning to wonder if the problem is now more hardware related..? I can no longer verify that my stick works in il2 1946 cuz I can't get it to install with win7 so i have no real way of determining if my stick is now faulty or not. Crazy thing is is that the FSSDOE Joystick program picks up the stick and the respective slider for throttle and other axis inputs all work so I am at a loss as to why not in game. If I could get my hands on another stick to try then that might shed some light into this. I know for a fact though that I had a perfectly working setup in 2009 when I last was flying online..I suppose the stick's internal components could fail somewhat in that time...but why then does it work on the FSSDOE prg?

Finally..! problems solved Happy .. I now have fully functioning ailerons and rudder and throttle! Turns out I had to set the slider values in the in game options for Joystick & Rudder input to exactly middle on deadzone and sensitivity for both! Why I never remembered this from in the past I can only put down to getting old..er! Poke Tounge Now to install those two fixes.. I wonder if there's any online support still with HL..anybody know? Gonna go check! Smile

Over the past few days I've been firing up SDOE more with FS-WWI and the Base Pack and all of the other Packs for the WW2 side of things. It's great to be back in the air again! Lately I've been too occupied with real life/girlfriend/trips/other PC games...

It's fun to see how far everything came, all of the hard work and tinkering all brought together in the packs for our enjoyment. I still have projects that itch at me to do.
