Good news. The Ju52 floatplane floats.
Will post a film at least by weekend, maybe sooner.
Here' the deal:
1. Modified terrain. Seafloor at minus 50 feet. Then a layer of water material for the spash effects at minus 0.5 feet. Then a layer of treetop material at 0 feet. Treetop material allows sinking, but is a little less acidic as our normal water material. Seafloor at minus 50 to allow some playground space under the water.
The Ju52 floatplane has a "float guage" to keep her from sinking. She is not touching the bottom/seafloor. The guage keeps her from touching the water material as well, thus the plane/pilot is not damaged. Been floating now for 30 minutes. No problems. Nice occuring rocking effect as well for wave simulation.
2. Hope to have a nice little package out before Christmas.

Stay tuned.

Which terrain are you using for testing? I assume you had to edit the terrain at a model level and not just add ground units to help?

What other things had to be added to the floatplane to allow it to float? Just the gauge or more?

Thanks for all your hard work mate!!

Oh and a P.S.: How does this affect existing floatplanes and torps/water bombs?

I thought the Ju52 always floated. Surprised The other float planes do.

~As I understand it, floatplanes float only at special places. With this technique, you may land anywhere in the ocean. Plus a "natural" occurring rocking effect, without dofs or anything.
~No vehicles added to the terrain. That is the terrain the plane is floating on. I'm using my "Test Range" terrain.
~The floatplane has a couple of extra wheels, and a simple "float guage" (one dof, controlled by a querry).

Sweet. How hard would this be to add to other terrains once perfected?

Can't wait to see - what sort of texture are you able to apply to the water surface? Too bad we can't use DX9 water...

Here's a link to a rough little film I've posted on YouTube.

Very nicely done, 7mks. I really like the little rocking affect once the aircraft comes to a stop. Once again you've demonstrated that there's life in the old girl yet!

I guess there is no way to keep the water splashes? Sad

I think the non-floater demonstration answers that.
Also, the the water texture file has an alpha channel. So the ripples will also be seen.

Bullets/Bombs/whenever you strike the water material just below the treetop material (graphical representation of the water surface) you'll get splashes. Splashes on water mean damage. Damage means trouble.

Could always implement an effect within the model - like with the juef128 "smoke" and exhaust flames. Just had no time to do it.

I'd much rather have no splashes.. To me they always looked kinda silly!

Yes, I'm rather pleased with the current setup.
Like I said, with the real fake water you will have splashes with bullet/bomb/sinking/etc...whenever there's something destructive going on. A nice landing/movement, no splashes.
