Thanks to LesterBoffo, FS-WWI will be getting an R.E.8! He sent over the .AC files yesterday and it looks like I will be able to import this into SDOE. Happy I've got to rescale, rotate and of course be sure the shading is correct.

I will keep progress posted here. I will be needing a skinner once I have everything mapped the way I want it. I will have to remap the fuselage so its top and bottom don't have texture stretching.

Watch this space!

It's starting to look like an airplane:

The FM coding has begun. I do it as I import the parts...

Does OPS extrapolate wing areas, airfoils and aspect ratios from the loaded 3D files when it creates the FM, or am I mistaken about the FM building process?

It's looking quite nice actually, I'm getting ready to attempt to make my own model in OPS I was thinking the Morane Saulnier "L" would be good as it's relatively simple.

I guess I should hit the builder's resources booklets in the download.

I may need some help though Smile

The FM does not... Sad We've got to tell Open Plane what airfoils to use, the span, cord, area, aspect ratio, density, CG, incline and so on.

If you have questions, I'm here! To be honest, I would start with something even more simple like a static ground unit.

I've got a static version of the RE8 for aerodrome clutter. It's in one piece, couldn't be too hard, Or I could try my attempt a damaged stone building.

I take it this is much harder than importing to TW? As long as it doesn't involve hex editing.. #evil

Yes, but beware. You will have to properly shade the parts before combining and importing. This is the biggest time consuming part for me with any model import. I have to properly shade the parts and be sure there are no duplicate surfaces lying about.

No hex editing needed! Just a tedious process from start to finish...

Are you saying that surface normalks need to be kept in alignment? I've been bitten by that problem before with my early FMS models.

I'm going to go ahead with trying out my Morane Saulnier "L" as my first conversion. If I get somewhere with it we've got another needed plane for the sim.

Yes, exactly... (You are much more fluent in the language of 3d modeling than I) It's a big headache when modeling for SDOE. Didn't always be the case, but since the addition of real time lighting in SDOE it has been... Which is why many WW2 aircraft for SDOE have really ugly looking shading. Sad

Indeed, the more aircraft that can fill proper roles the better! Happy

I am making some progress this morning!

As you can see, the rudder, VStab, Hstabs and wing struts are in place. Also, I added the pilot and the gunner. If you look closely, you might even spot the bomb racks for the wings.

Also, I have distributed and sized the inertia placement:

Left to do:

Flight Model tuning
BodyPoint placement
Damage model
Interior modeling of the cockpit and gunner
3d Shadow

Yeah! now that's an 'arry Tate..Cool Beeeeyouteeful!

I especially like the new prop, the one I made was OK, it was originally from the FE4, as per the drawing so it was just an artist's rendering, not the final prototype.

The twin Lewis Scarf aught to keep the Flying Circus on their guard. We are talking about the RE8 made famous by the Australian Squadrons. They aggressively flew the 'arry Tate. Some of their crews were as fearsome as the F2b crews of late Bloody April.

I've got some interior images from my Early Aircraft drawings CD if you need some gauge placement and control positions.

Fantastic!

I "borrowed" the prop 3d model from the B.E.2c that Recon3 made, and the texture from the D.H.4. The wheels are from our Sopwith Camel, made slightly larger. The gunner is from the D.H.4 as I used it as the base. I've got some photos I've saved from the interwebz. Getting the interior inplace is always a pain in the arse. Wink
