Wow very cool! Guy has got guts flying in something that small. Total respect for flying an aircraft with a lawn mower engine. _________________ 'Go Fly A Kite!'

He must have a very long power cable for it, my mower cable barely reaches to the end of my garden _________________ Hello, all Cooler aircraft. I'm going in to attack. Stand by to come in in your order when I tell you. |

I'm curious about what engine he's using, most of these small scale ships would be done with an ultralight 2 stroke engine of about 40 to 70 hp. The only "lawn mower" engine I can think of would be either the opposed boxer style or V twin Briggs and Strattons or Kolhers out of a big riding mower. And they're usually only about 30 or so hp.
But hey, it flies, that's the fun part of it. _________________ FMS & Targetware 3D Model dev. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'lawn mower' engine. The article is from the Daily Mail, who don't mind ignoring the facts for a good headline _________________ Hello, all Cooler aircraft. I'm going in to attack. Stand by to come in in your order when I tell you. |

Well it's not that uncommon to use industrial OHV engines for ultralights.
The newer twin cylinder Briggs and Kohlers are fairly light, somewhere on the order of less than 200 pounds, and have full pressure lubrication and (or) roller or ball bearing supported mainshafts. They're also relatively cheap compared to the newest ultralight engines.
He's gearing down the output to swing a bigger prop so he's done some homework on the installation.
Yeah, the Daily Mail not exactly journalistic excellence, but they do cover some interesting aircraft events on occasion. They did a good piece on the Manchester Museum and AVRO aircraft's rebuilding of the first Allen V, Roe Type 1 Triplane back in October of last year. _________________ FMS & Targetware 3D Model dev. |
